The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the country’s premier bourse, witnessed a downturn in the outgoing week (June 21–25), characterized by a decline in major indices, shrinking trading volume, and a widespread drop in share prices. Driven by a dominant bearish trend, the total market capitalization of the exchange plummeted by Tk 914 crore over the week.
According to the DSE weekly market analysis, the total market capitalization stood at Tk 6,93,440 crore on the final trading day of the previous week. By the close of the outgoing week, this figure dropped to Tk 6,92,526 crore, marking a 0.13% contraction in market value.
Drastic Drop in Market Turnover
The week recorded a steep decline in financial liquidity and trading activity. Total turnover on the DSE fell by Tk 1,661.39 crore, settling at Tk 4,757.82 crore for the week. This is a significant drop compared to the previous week’s total turnover of Tk 6,419.21 crore.
Downward Trend Across Key Indices
The core benchmark index of the bourse nudged downward, alongside a contraction in blue-chip and Islamic counters:
-
DSEX (Core Index): Shed 8 points over the week to settle at 5,652 points.
-
DS30 (Blue-Chip Index): Declined by 11 points, closing the week at 2,131 points.
-
DSES (Shariah Index): Dropped by 6 points to finish at 1,143 points.
Losers Outnumber Gainers
Out of the 388 companies, mutual funds, and bonds traded on the premier exchange during the week, the vast majority suffered price corrections. The advance-decline ratio clearly favored the bears:
-
Declined: 222 issues
-
Advanced: 145 issues
-
Unchanged: 21 issues
Market analysts noted that while the bourse saw minor recovery attempts toward the end of the week, the overall weekly metrics were heavily weighed down by early-week sell-offs and cautious investor behavior.
