Dhaka, September 22, 2025: Heavy rainfall has brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat across Bangladesh, including the capital city. The downpour, which began Sunday night, intensified Monday morning, leading to significant waterlogging in various parts of Dhaka.
Citywide Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos
The intense rain has caused severe waterlogging, transforming many of the city’s alleyways and main streets into temporary canals. This has created immense suffering for commuters and residents, especially those heading to work in the morning.
Particularly hard-hit areas include Mirpur, Manik Mia Avenue, and parts of the Uttara Airport Road, where water has accumulated to knee-level depths. As a result, major roads throughout the capital are experiencing extensive traffic jams, adding to the public’s misery.
Weather Report
According to the Meteorological Department, Dhaka received 34 millimeters of rain from Sunday midnight to Monday morning. This spell of rain is attributed to the influence of the monsoon winds.
While most parts of the country, including Dhaka, experienced cloudy skies on Sunday, the southeastern Chattogram division received heavy rainfall. Feni district recorded the highest rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to Monday morning, with a total of 114 millimeters.
Monsoon winds have spread across the entire country, initiating this nationwide rain spell from midnight on Sunday.
Forecast and Temperature
Weather experts predict that intermittent rain will continue throughout the day. Meteorologist Shahinul Islam from the Meteorological Department informed the media that while monsoon winds are active nationwide, they are particularly strong in the southern and central regions. He expects the intensity of the rain to decrease starting tomorrow.
The rainfall has led to a slight drop in temperature, providing a temporary respite from the heat. However, the meteorologist noted that temperatures are likely to rise again from tomorrow.
