The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially announced the nomination of Rasheda Begum Hira, a prominent veteran leader and advisor to the party, for a reserved women’s seat in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad. This marks her third time being selected for such a position within the national parliament.
A Legacy of Political Activism
Rasheda Begum Hira, who serves as the Training Affairs Secretary of the BNP, boasts a long-standing history of political involvement. Her journey began in 1979 while she was a student, eventually leading her to hold leadership positions within the Jatiyatabadi Chhatradal (BNP’s student wing) at the University of Chittagong, where she ran for Vice President and General Secretary of the Shamsunnahar Hall.
Her political dedication was recognized early in her career. As a prominent student leader, she accompanied the late President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia on a state visit to Nepal in 1981. Additionally, she was invited to the Bangabhaban as a “talented student.”
Professional and Political Contributions
Beyond her political career, Hira has contributed her expertise to various international organizations. Between 1984 and 1990, she served in key roles, including as a Gender Specialist for organizations such as Oxfam, Save the Children, and VSO.
A steadfast figure in the BNP, she has been an active participant in all party movements since 1990, including the resistance against autocratic rule. Her loyalty to the party was particularly visible during the recent political shifts, where she faced legal challenges, including arrest and imprisonment, during the “black flag” protest programs against the former Awami League-led administration.
Personal and Educational Background
Hira holds an MA from the University of Chittagong (1981) and an M.Phil from the University of Rajshahi (1990). Originally hailing from Algi village in the Rampur Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila, she is the maternal aunt of Sohel Rushdi, the President of the Chandpur Press Club. She was married to the late Md. Rafiqul Islam Majumder, a retired Divisional Food Officer in Chattogram.
Expression of Gratitude
Following her nomination, Rasheda Begum Hira expressed her deep gratitude to the party leadership, including BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. She also extended her thanks to several prominent party leaders and members of parliament for their support.
