In a major move to stabilize essential commodity prices for low-income families, the government has decided to procure 18 million liters (1.8 crore liters) of rice bran oil. The oil will be sold at subsidized rates through the Family Card program of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
The total expenditure for this massive procurement is estimated at 305.56 crore BDT. The approval was granted during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) held on Wednesday, presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Procurement Breakdown
The procurement was approved through two separate proposals from the Ministry of Commerce under the Open Tendering Method (OTM).
1. Initial 8 Million Liter Procurement
The committee approved the purchase of 8 million liters of rice bran oil across four lots, costing 135.15 crore BDT. Out of 11 initial bids, four companies were selected:

This procurement ensures a steady supply for TCB’s ongoing efforts to provide relief to nearly 10 million (1 crore) family cardholders across the country. By opting for locally produced rice bran oil, the government aims to support the domestic agro-industry while offering a healthier alternative to traditional edible oils at an affordable price.
Note: The average price per liter across these deals ranges from approximately 167.50 BDT to 170.75 BDT, which is significantly lower than current market retail prices.
