Bangladesh Bank has announced a zero-tolerance policy toward “mob culture” within its ranks, promising strict disciplinary action against officials involved in the recent harassment of senior leadership.
The announcement came during a press conference on Thursday (February 26), shortly after the 14th Governor of the central bank, Mostaqur Rahman, officially assumed his post and held his debut meeting with top-level executives.
Crackdown on Workplace Misconduct
The central bank’s Executive Director and Spokesperson, Arif Hossain Khan, addressed the chaotic events of Wednesday, where a group of officials reportedly harassed and forcibly removed Ahsan Ullah, an advisor to the Governor.
According to eyewitness accounts, a mob of 20 to 30 officials intercepted the advisor at the Governor’s House main gate, shouting slogans and attempting physical assault. Reports specifically named several high-ranking officials as participants in the altercation.
“The new Governor is committed to establishing institutional good governance,” the spokesperson stated. “Those found involved in this ‘mob culture’ will face necessary action in accordance with the bank’s Human Resources (HR) policy.”
Honoring the Reform Legacy
In his opening remarks to the staff, Governor Rahman lauded the “transformative reforms” initiated by the outgoing Governor, Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, and the interim government’s finance advisor. He credited their leadership for pulling a fragile banking sector back from the “brink of collapse.”
The Governor confirmed that he intends to build upon this foundation of macroeconomic stability rather than overturning existing progress.
A Roadmap for Economic Recovery
Governor Rahman outlined a multi-pronged strategy to re-energize the national economy, focusing on three core areas:
-
Industrial Revival: The central bank will provide policy support, incentives, and enhanced banking coordination to reopen factories that have shuttered over the last 18 months. The goal is to drive production and job creation.
-
Inflation Control: Keeping the prices of essential goods within the reach of the general public remains the bank’s top priority.
-
Interest Rate Review: Acknowledging that high interest rates currently hinder investment, the Governor pledged a review to balance monetary stability with the need for affordable credit.
Institutional Decentralization
To improve efficiency and transparency, the Governor announced a shift toward “Delegation of Authority.” By decentralizing decision-making powers to various administrative levels, he aims to create a rules-based, non-discriminatory environment that eliminates personal biases in official processes.
“The decision-making process will be entirely systematic and merit-based,” Khan added, emphasizing the Governor’s vision for a modernized central bank.
