At least 12 members of a local forest guard unit have been killed in a deadly attack in Nigeria’s north-central Kwara State. Armed bandits stormed a government facility in Oke-Ode town on Sunday morning and opened indiscriminate fire.
Police confirmed the incident on Monday (September 29), adding that four others were critically injured and are receiving treatment.
Security forces, including the army and forest protection units, have launched a joint operation to track down the attackers. Authorities have assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
The attack highlights the growing insecurity in Nigeria’s north-western and central regions, where armed groups—locally known as “bandits”—regularly carry out mass killings, kidnappings, and raids on rural communities.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq condemned the killings and called for increased military presence in the region. The Nigerian army has already deployed additional troops to Kwara to oversee operations against the assailants.
