Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Meets Italian Prime Minister, Focus on Safe Migration
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus held a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with safe migration topping the agenda. The meeting took place at a hotel in New York on Wednesday (24 September), local time.
Later, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, briefed the media and said the central focus of the discussion was safe migration. He noted that many Bangladeshis lose their lives while attempting to reach Italy by sea, often lured by human traffickers who send them through dangerous maritime routes, leading to frequent tragedies.
The Rohingya crisis was also discussed during the meeting. Prime Minister Meloni assured that Italy will send a high-level delegation to the upcoming conference on the Rohingya issue, scheduled for 30 September at the UN headquarters.
Professor Yunus also proposed expanding trade relations between Bangladesh and Italy. In response, Prime Minister Meloni suggested forming an Italy-Bangladesh Business Forum. She reaffirmed Italy’s support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and expressed her interest in visiting Bangladesh in December.
