Police have detained two Chinese nationals for allegedly living in a residential building without permission in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachhari. Several electronic and technological devices, including laptops, were seized from their possession.
The two were taken into custody on Thursday (13 November) evening from the fourth floor of a building owned by Iliyas Hossain in the Ramgarh municipal market area.
Ramgarh Police Station OC Md. Main Uddin said the individuals will remain in police custody until Friday (14 November).
The detained Chinese passport holders are Jiang Chengthong and Teng Tonggu.
According to police sources, both individuals arrived in Ramgarh on Wednesday (12 November) through one Md. Rokon Uddin, a foreman at “Aborna Classic,” an aluminum company located in Kumira, Chattogram. They rented the apartment by paying a 30,000 taka advance without providing any valid documents. The building owner was informed that they would be involved in the import–export of electronic goods.
OC Main Uddin said the police acted based on information from locals. He added that, as per the directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, foreign nationals require special permission to stay in the Chittagong Hill Tracts—permission that the two did not have.
The seized electronic devices will be examined with assistance from BTRC, he added. Legal actions will be taken as per regulations after verification.
