Seven Islamist-oriented political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, are set to stage protest rallies in Dhaka today (Thursday) to press home several demands, including the holding of the next national election under the July Charter.
The demonstrations will take place in different parts of the capital from afternoon to evening. According to the announcement, similar programs will be held in divisional cities tomorrow (Friday) and in all districts and upazilas on September 26.
The participating parties are: Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis (led by Mamunul Haque), Khelafat Majlis, Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA).
Although the groups have announced 5, 6, or 7-point charters separately, their key demands remain largely similar:
- Full implementation of the July Charter and a national election based on it
- Introduction of proportional representation (PR) in Parliament (some demanding in both chambers)
- Ensuring a level playing field for free, fair, and acceptable elections
- Justice for past “atrocities, killings, and corruption” by the previous government
