COLOMBO – Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away from a heart attack in Colombo, according to NewsWire. The tragic news came on the same day his son was on the field playing for Sri Lanka in an Asia Cup match.
During the match, Afghanistan batted first, scoring 169 runs for eight wickets. Sri Lanka successfully chased the target with eight balls and six wickets to spare. However, it was a difficult day with the ball for Wellalage.
In the final over of the Afghan innings, Mohammad Nabi hit four consecutive sixes off Dunith Wellalage, reaching a half-century in just 19 balls. Nabi was eventually out on the last ball, having scored 59 runs from 22 deliveries, helping Afghanistan reach a total of 169.
Wellalage finished his four overs with figures of one wicket for 49 runs. The 22-year-old all-rounder is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young talents.
