In a significant shift in leadership, Tarique Rahman has formally assumed the position of Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The announcement was made on Friday night (January 9) following an emergency meeting of the party’s National Standing Committee, the highest policymaking body, held at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.
Constitutional Transition
Addressing reporters after the meeting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the decision was made in accordance with the party’s constitution. The position of Chairman had become vacant following the passing of the former Prime Minister and long-time party chief, Begum Khaleda Zia, on December 30.
“According to the provisions of the party constitution, Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has been entrusted with the responsibilities of the Chairman of the BNP,” Mirza Fakhrul said. He further clarified that since the post is now formally filled, the designation of “Acting Chairman” no longer exists.
Background and Return
Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, had been serving as the party’s Acting Chairman since February 2018, after his mother was imprisoned.
After spending 17 years in self-imposed exile in London, Mr. Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25, 2025. His formal appointment as Chairman marks a new chapter for the party as it prepares for the upcoming national elections scheduled for February 2026.
Northern Tour Postponed
During the press briefing, the Secretary General also informed the media that Tarique Rahman’s scheduled tour of Northern Bangladesh (North Bengal) has been temporarily postponed. The decision was reportedly made following a request from the Election Commission to ensure a stable political environment ahead of the polls.
