The United Business Forum held an emergency meeting on Friday, March 6, emphasizing that the upcoming elections for the century-old Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) are critical for restoring democratic practices within the business community.
The meeting, held at a private residence in the city, was presided over by Mohammad Abdus Salam, Managing Director of Asian Group and Director of BGMEA. Amir Humayun Mahmud Chowdhury, former President of the CCCI, attended as the chief guest.
Key Highlights from the Meeting
Speakers at the forum expressed that the CCCI had been under the “monopolistic control” of the Awami League for an extended period. They argued that this dominance deprived general traders of expected growth and restricted their ability to operate independently.
“The election is vital to reclaiming the rights of the business community. A fair election will restore a democratic environment to this historic institution,” the speakers noted.
The forum also raised concerns regarding a specific group allegedly attempting to obstruct the election process through various tactics. Members demanded that the century-old chamber be returned to the hands of general businessmen to safeguard their collective interests.
Prominent Attendees
The meeting saw significant participation from both Ordinary and Associate member groups:
-
Ordinary Group: Representatives included Md. Amjad Hossain Chowdhury (Rising Computer), Md. Nasir Uddin Chowdhury (Eastern Apparels Ltd), Kamal Mostafa Chowdhury (Raza Corporation), and several other managing directors from sectors ranging from logistics to apparel.
