A daring armed robbery took place in Bejpara village under Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah on Monday night (October 6), around 8 p.m. The robbers held the house members at gunpoint and looted gold ornaments worth around Tk 3 lakh. Locals later managed to capture three of the robbers while they were trying to flee.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident on Tuesday (October 7).
According to locals, an eight-member armed gang, led by Rokon—son of Matiar Rahman from Chanduali village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila—carried out the robbery at the house of Abdur Rashid in Bejpara village. The group included Shahabur Mondal (32) of Harinakundu upazila, Rana Hossain (23) of Boithapara village, Tushar Ahmed Sakib (21) of Chanduali village, Tohid Hossain (18), Kurban Ali, and Torikul Islam (38), among others.
The robbers reportedly held Abdur Rashid’s wife, Rizia Begum, at gunpoint and looted gold chains, earrings, her daughter’s “Sita Haar” necklace, and a ring—valued at approximately Tk 300,000—before attempting to flee.
Showing great courage, Rizia Begum chased the robbers while shouting for help. Her cries alerted nearby residents, who quickly surrounded and captured three of the suspects—Shahabur Mondal, Rana Hossain, and Tushar Ahmed Sakib—after a fierce scuffle. The others managed to escape.
Police sources said Tushar Ahmed Sakib had just completed his SSC exams this year, while Rana Hossain recently returned home from Malaysia.
Upon receiving the news, Kaliganj OC Shafiqul Islam arrived at the scene with police reinforcements. Later, an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) and army personnel also reached the spot to control the situation and rescue the detained suspects from the angry mob before taking them into police custody.
