The United States is set to deploy 200 troops as part of a joint multinational task force aimed at restoring stability in the Gaza Strip. However, no separate American forces will be deployed inside Gaza itself, according to a report by Reuters.
Two senior US officials confirmed the deployment details on Thursday, speaking to reporters on the condition of anonymity. They stated that the 200 troops will form the core of the task force, which will also include representatives from the armed forces of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and potentially the United Arab Emirates. The overall mission, according to the U.S., is to bring stability back to the Gaza region.
Deployment Follows Ceasefire Agreement
The troop announcement follows a breakthrough in diplomatic efforts, where Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on Wednesday, the third day of ongoing discussions held in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The truce was brokered by mediators including the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.
Under the terms of the agreement, the conflict in Gaza will cease, and the two sides will engage in a prisoner exchange.
Gaza and Israel Celebrate Truce
The news that both parties had agreed to a ceasefire was met with celebrations and joy by residents in Gaza. Similarly, celebrations also took place in Israel, where residents see the truce as an opportunity for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Israel has been conducting a relentless offensive in Gaza since October 7, 2023. During this period, there were only two brief ceasefires, totaling a little over two months. The ongoing attacks have resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians and left approximately 170,000 people wounded.
