Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud stated on Saturday that a conducive environment exists for the upcoming polls, asserting that there will be no “election engineering” in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Commitment to Transparency
Speaking to reporters after a consultation meeting at the Rangpur Circuit House on Saturday afternoon (February 7), the Commissioner emphasized the readiness of the administration.
-
Human Resources: Approximately 1.8 million officials, including Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers, are dedicated to delivering a credible election.
-
Security Forces: The Police, BGB, Army, and Ansar are committed and prepared to maintain law and order.
-
Current Climate: EC Masud noted that the security situation is comparatively better than in previous periods.
Zero Pressure on the Commission
Addressing concerns regarding the country’s political landscape, the Commissioner clarified that the Election Commission (EC) is operating without any external pressure. However, he urged public cooperation to ensure the process remains acceptable and smooth.
“Our message is clear: we are against any movements that hinder the election. Citizens must take an active role in ensuring a fair environment,” Masud stated.
He further observed a significant shift in political culture, noting that leaders from the two major political parties have complied with the EC’s directives—including the removal of posters and the cancellation of political tours—to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
Condemnation of Violence
While acknowledging the heated rhetoric between rival parties as a “political strategy” of the election war, the Commissioner strongly condemned all forms of violence. He specifically addressed the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha.
-
Justice for Hadi: Masud called on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to justice.
-
Official Attendance: The meeting was attended by regional and district election officials, the Deputy Commissioner (DC), and the Police Superintendent (SP) of Rangpur, along with judicial and executive magistrates overseeing the six constituencies in the district.
