The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the country’s premier bourse, witnessed a massive correction on Monday, the second trading day of the week, with a vast majority of traded securities facing sharp price declines. Decliners outnumbered gainers by a staggering nine-to-one ratio, dragging down all key indices and pushing daily turnover to its lowest level this month.
Market analysis revealed that trading on te DSE commenced with a downward trend as most shares and units opened lower, a bearish sentiment that persisted until the closing bell. By the end of the day, out of 389 issues traded, only 36 managed to post gains, while 319 closed lower, and 34 remained unchanged.
Key Indices Deep in the Red
Driven by the massive wave of sell-offs, the DSEX, the broad benchmark index of the apex exchange, shed 86 points to settle at 5,554 points.
Other key indices followed a similar downward trajectory. The DS30 index, which tracks blue-chip equities, plummeted by 35.5 points to finish at 2,110 points. Concurrently, the Shariah-compliant index, DSES, slid 19 points to close the session at 1,129 points.
Turnover Drops Below the Thousand-Crore Mark
Daily trade volume on the DSE also took a significant hit, totaling BDT 876.07 crore on Monday. This marks the first time in the current month of June that the daily turnover of the premier bourse has dropped below the BDT 1,000-crore threshold.
Compared to Sunday’s turnover of BDT 1,002.44 crore, the market liquidity shrank by approximately BDT 126.37 crore within a single session.
CSE Follows a Similar Downtrend
The country’s secondary stock market, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), mirrored the capital’s bearish sentiment. Out of 239 traded issues on the port city’s bourse, 36 closed higher, 181 declined, and 22 witnessed no price movement.
Consequently, the CASPI, the all-share price index of the CSE, dropped by 178 points to settle at 15,072 points. Despite the price plunge, the CSE recorded a surge in transactional activity, with shares and units worth BDT 74.42 crore changing hands, up from BDT 30.40 crore registered on the previous trading day.
