A special meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the National Parliament Bhaban on Thursday morning, officially approved the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2026-27.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, along with other cabinet members, attended the high-level meeting. The Finance Minister is scheduled to formally present the proposed budget in the National Parliament later this afternoon.
The Budget Blueprint: Deficit and Financing
The expenditure for the upcoming FY2026-27 is projected at Tk 9.38 lakh crore. In contrast, the government has set a total revenue collection target of Tk 6.95 lakh crore.
This leaves an overall fiscal deficit of Tk 2.43 lakh crore. To bridge this massive gap between income and expenditure, the government has outlined a strategy to mobilize funds from both domestic and external avenues:
-
External Sources: Tk 1.16 lakh crore will be sourced through foreign loans and grants.
-
Domestic Sources: Tk 1.27 lakh crore will be raised internally.
-
Banking Sector: The government plans to borrow Tk 1.12 lakh crore from the country’s banking system.
-
Savings Certificates & Others: The remaining Tk 15,000 crore will be secured through national savings certificates and other non-banking tools.
-
A Historic Milestone for the New Administration
The budget proposal will be laid out in the parliamentary session presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
This marks the 55th national budget of Bangladesh since its independence. Furthermore, this will be the debut budget presentation for Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury as the Finance Minister under the current administration.
Following established constitutional protocols, the budget received the Cabinet’s nod this morning and will subsequently be signed into assent by President Mohammed Shahabuddin before being placed in the House. The new fiscal year will officially commence on July 1, 2026.
