A significant shipment of 62,150 metric tons of wheat from the United States has arrived at the outer anchorage of the Chattogram Port. This marks the second phase of a major government-to-government (G2G) import initiative aimed at bolstering the national food reserve.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Food, this delivery follows a previous first shipment of 58,457 metric tons. The vessel, MV Ubon Naree, reached the port’s outer berth on Friday, and officials have already commenced sample testing of the grain to ensure quality standards are met before unloading begins.
Distribution and Logistics
The Ministry has outlined a specific distribution plan for this shipment to optimize supply across the country:
-
Chattogram Port: 37,290 metric tons will be unloaded here for the eastern and central regions.
-
Mongla Port: The remaining 24,860 metric tons will be offloaded to serve the western and southern parts of the country.
Strengthening Food Security through G2G Deals
With the arrival of this consignment, the government has successfully fulfilled its current contractual obligations for imported wheat. To date, a total of 467,884 metric tons of wheat have arrived under two primary agreements:
-
G2G-1: 237,845 metric tons.
-
G2G-2: 230,039 metric tons.
Meeting National Demand
The Ministry highlighted the critical nature of these imports given the disparity between Bangladesh’s domestic production and total consumption.
| Category | Annual Amount (Metric Tons) |
| Total National Demand | ~ 7,000,000 (70 Lakh) |
| Domestic Production | ~ 1,000,000 (10 Lakh) |
| Import Requirement | ~ 6,000,000 (60 Lakh) |
While domestic farmers contribute approximately 1 million metric tons, the remaining 6 million metric tons must be sourced from international markets through both public and private sector channels. The Ministry emphasized that all necessary arrangements are in place for the rapid discharge of the current shipment to ensure a steady supply in the local markets.
