The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of pro-Iranian armed political groups, claimed on Saturday to have carried out eight attacks on two US airbases within a 24-hour period spanning from Friday morning to Saturday morning.
In a formal statement, the group confirmed that its fighters launched a series of drones and missiles targeting the Al-Harir and Al-Asad airbases. While the coalition provided few specific details regarding the outcome of these strikes, the surge in activity marks a significant escalation in regional hostilities.
Attacks on US Embassy and Infrastructure
Beyond the military installations, the Islamic Resistance also targeted the US Embassy in Iraq. According to Iraqi security officials, missiles directed at the diplomatic compound resulted in the destruction of the embassy’s helipad.
As of Saturday afternoon, neither the management of the Al-Harir and Al-Asad bases nor the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has released an official statement regarding the extent of the damage or potential casualties.
Regional Conflict and ‘Level 4’ Warnings
The intensity of these attacks follows a broader regional flare-up that began on February 28, involving direct conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Since then, Iran and its proxy groups across the Middle East have frequently deployed drones and missiles against US military and civilian targets.
In response to the deteriorating security situation:
-
Travel Advisory: The US Embassy in Iraq issued a “Level 4” (Do Not Travel) warning on Friday for American citizens.
-
Security Assessment: The embassy warned that pro-Iranian armed groups are “likely” to continue targeting US installations and personnel throughout the country.
The situation remains volatile as the US military maintains its presence in Iraq amidst persistent threats from localized armed factions.
