The 13th National Parliament of Bangladesh is set to welcome a historic surge of new leadership, with over 150 first-time Members of Parliament (MPs) elected in the latest general elections. Among the most notable newcomers is the Prime Minister-designate and BNP Chairman, Tarique Rahman, who secured his first-ever parliamentary win, signaling a major transition in the country’s political landscape.
According to an analysis of the Election Commission’s results, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is poised to form the next government after a landslide victory, leads the tally of fresh faces. Approximately 71 BNP candidates have been elected as MPs for the first time. Similarly, Jamaat-e-Islami, set to become the main opposition, saw 65 of its 68 elected representatives win their seats for the first time—including its Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
A Surge of New Political Entities
Beyond the two major parties, the 13th Parliament will also feature representatives from five parties that have never previously held seats. This includes:
-
National Citizen Party (NCP): 6 seats (including key leaders from the August 5 uprising)
-
Khelafat Majlish: 2 seats
-
Gonosamhati Andolon: 1 seat (Zonayed Saki)
-
Islami Andolon Bangladesh: 1 seat
-
National Democratic Movement (NDM): 1 seat (Bobby Hajjaj, who ran under the BNP’s ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol)
Hope for Institutional Reform
Political analysts view the influx of new members as a positive development following years of controversy surrounding veteran politicians. Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Secretary of Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN), expressed optimism that this “new blood” would help restore the reputation of the Jatiya Sangsad.
“Having so many new faces is undoubtedly a positive sign,” Dr. Majumdar told the media. “In the past, many MPs were accused of various crimes and irregularities. We hope the newcomers, including Tarique Rahman, will prioritize public interest over personal gain and work to erase the stigma attached to our parliament.”
Voices of the “New Bangladesh”
The newly elected members have pledged to play an active role in building the “New Bangladesh” envisioned following the August 5 mass uprising.
Shama Obayed Islam, BNP Organizing Secretary and first-time MP from Faridpur-2, emphasized the diverse professional backgrounds of the new cohort. “Every new member comes from a specific background with their own expertise. We intend to use those skills to rebuild the country,” she stated.
Shahadat Hossain Selim, elected from Lakshmipur-1, highlighted the democratic significance of the vote. “After 17 years, people were finally able to vote in a peaceful and festive environment. My priority is to contribute meaningfully to the welfare of my constituents and the nation in parliament.”
