A clash erupted between transport workers and students of Barishal BM College at the Nathullabad Bus Stand over the issue of half fare. At least 20 people from both sides were injured in the incident.
The clash broke out on Saturday (15 November) evening.
According to eyewitnesses, several BM College students arrived at Nathullabad by bus. When paying the fare, they insisted on paying half fare, which led to an argument with local transport workers. The situation escalated quickly and turned into a violent confrontation. During the chaos, agitated students vandalized more than 50 buses.
Students were seen chanting slogans and blocking the road by burning tyres. As a result, all types of vehicles on the Barishal–Kuakata route remained suspended. However, students allowed movement of ambulances carrying patients.
BM College students claimed that transport workers assaulted them first. After news of the assault spread, more students rushed to Nathullabad. Transport workers allegedly hurled bricks and stones at the students, further enraging them and prompting the protest. Students insisted that they were unfairly beaten and that they are legally entitled to half fare.
However, some transport leaders stated that apart from government holidays, they usually accept half fare from students. They claimed that on Fridays and Saturdays, they do not offer half fare—leading to the dispute.
Barishal Airport Police Station OC Mamun Ul Islam said that several rounds of clashes occurred between students and transport workers. “The situation was brought under control through the efforts of law enforcement,” he added. More details will be provided later.
