The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organized a distinctive program today to raise public awareness about protecting the Hilsa brood during the breeding season. Led by BNP Vice Chairman Dr. Asaduzzaman Ripon, the initiative took place in Louhojang Upazila of Munshiganj district.
The Government has imposed a 22-day nationwide ban on catching Hilsa to boost its production. To support this governmental measure and create awareness, the BNP held a colorful boat rally with party flags on the Padma River.
The impressive flotilla consisted of 25 trawlers carrying over a thousand party leaders and activists with banners and festoons. The rally commenced from Yashaldia and Shimulia Ghat and concluded at the Padma riverbank near the Louhojang BNP office.
Hilsa is our national asset. Therefore, it is our duty to protect this national fish during the breeding season- BNP Vice Chairman Dr. Asaduzzaman Ripon
Following the boat rally, a human chain was organized at the riverbank, and a civic gathering was held adjacent to the BNP office.
Addressing the gathering, BNP Vice Chairman Dr. Asaduzzaman Ripon emphasized the importance of the national fish. “Hilsa is our national asset. Therefore, it is our duty to protect this national fish during the breeding season,” he stated.
He highlighted the significance of the 22-day ban, noting that it allows a single Hilsa brood to release millions of eggs in freshwater. Dr. Ripon asserted that as people living near the Padma, protecting the Hilsa brood during this period is everyone’s moral responsibility.
He drew an analogy, suggesting that just as a pregnant woman is protected by society, the Hilsa brood must be protected for these 22 days.
