The Conscience, the largest vessel of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, is continuing its perilous voyage despite stormy weather and reports of attacks on ships ahead in the fleet, according to Bangladeshi photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam.
In a Facebook Live video on Thursday (October 2), Alam shared footage from the ship’s deck, expressing firm resolve to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver much-needed aid.
“We received storm warnings from the Greek authorities, but the ship is pressing forward,” he said. “The captain increased speed last night to avoid the storm. The lightning has stopped, the rain has eased, and although this vessel is somewhat behind the rest of the flotilla, we are continuing.”
Alam also confirmed that some ships in the convoy had already come under attack. “We will not be intimidated by these assaults. We are on our way to Gaza. We will break the blockade. Palestine will be free,” he declared.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian initiative protesting Israel’s naval blockade and carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, consists of more than 45 vessels with around 500 passengers, including lawmakers and human rights defenders from various countries.
