Elon Musk has achieved an unprecedented financial milestone, becoming the only person in history to possess a net worth exceeding $500 billion. The historic surge in his wealth was fueled by the booming share prices of his various companies, primarily electric vehicle giant Tesla, according to a report by the BBC.
The Forbes Billionaires Index confirmed that the landmark was reached shortly after noon local time on Wednesday when Musk’s fortune peaked at $500.1 billion. Although his net worth settled slightly lower, just above $499 billion, by the close of the day, the achievement firmly solidifies his position as the world’s wealthiest individual, far surpassing his global technology rivals. Musk’s other ventures, including the AI company xAI and rocket manufacturer SpaceX, have also seen significant recent increases in share value.
Investor Confidence Drives Tesla Surge
The recent strong performance of Tesla’s stock is largely attributed to a positive shift in investor sentiment. Investors reportedly believe Musk is dedicating increased focus to his companies, moving past the period of criticism he faced for his previous involvement with the Trump administration.
Musk’s wealth is substantially tied to Tesla, where he holds an ownership stake of approximately 12%. The company’s share price has climbed by more than 20% this year alone, with the stock closing 3.3% higher on Wednesday in New York compared to the previous day. Furthermore, Musk’s purchase of nearly $1 billion worth of Tesla shares last month was interpreted by the investment community as a clear sign of his personal confidence in the company’s long-term future.
Widening the Gap with Top Competitors
According to the Forbes index, Musk is now significantly ahead of the world’s second-richest person, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, whose net worth stands at approximately $350.7 billion.
Ellison had briefly managed to surpass Musk last month when Oracle’s share price surged by over 40%. Musk’s latest achievement, however, reestablishes a commanding lead over his nearest competitors in the global wealth rankings.
