BNP has expressed satisfaction over Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday (September 26), where he strongly emphasized the upcoming national election in February.
Speaking to journalists at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan on Friday night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The Chief Adviser’s speech was very strong regarding the February election. There is no doubt left for us or other political parties. We are convinced that the election will be held in February 2026.”
Fakhrul further noted that for the first time, the Chief Adviser took opposition political parties along to the UN, reflecting a united national stance. “His main goal was to present the unity of the nation, which is a unique and much-needed initiative in Bangladesh’s context. We extended full cooperation, and our leader Tarique Rahman supported it,” he added.
On a separate query regarding Proportional Representation (PR), Fakhrul clarified: “We are not in favor of PR in the lower house, nor have we proposed it for the upper house. Such issues can be discussed and resolved later.”
BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir was also present during the media briefing.
