After seven years, the central student council election (GUKSU) is being held again at Gono Bishwabidyalay. Voting began at 9 a.m. and will continue until 3 p.m. across 19 polling centers spread across the university’s 32-acre campus.
A festive atmosphere has taken over the campus as students enthusiastically exercise their voting rights after a long wait.
This year, 57 candidates are contesting for 11 positions, with a total of 4,761 registered voters. According to the Election Commission, since the announcement of the schedule on August 11, the process included nomination paper distribution, scrutiny, publication of the final candidate list, and completion of dope tests.
To ensure security and smooth management, 350 security personnel have been deployed across the campus. CCTV cameras have been installed at every polling center, while the army and quick response teams are on standby as striking forces.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abul Hossain said the university administration is committed to ensuring a fair and impartial election. “As the only private university in the country to hold such a council election, GUKSU plays a vital role in developing future national leadership. We are hopeful this year’s election will be free, fair, and inclusive,” he added.
The first GUKSU election was held in 2013, while the third council was formed in 2018. However, it was dissolved in 2020. Today marks the election for the fourth student council.
