DHAKA – The Ministry of Commerce has granted permission to 23 companies to export a total of 58,000 tons of rice bran oil. This marks the first time the government has allowed such exports since imposing restrictions on January 15 to ensure stable domestic edible oil supply.
The permission letters were issued by the Export-2 branch of the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday, September 23. Among the approved firms, Majumder Agrotech International Limited and Bogura Multi Oil Mills Limited received the largest individual quotas, each authorized to export 10,000 tons.
The government has also implemented several conditions for the exports. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has imposed a 20% regulatory duty on rice bran oil exports to maintain stability in the domestic market. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce has instructed the exporters to comply with the rules of the Export Policy 2024-27 and has set a deadline of November 30 for the completion of all exports. The ministry stated that no company will be allowed to export more than their authorized quantity.
Earlier this year, the government took a decisive step to restrict the export of rice bran oil without prior permission to bolster domestic supply of edible oil. Since then, no export permits had been issued until this recent decision.
According to data from the Export Promotion Bureau and the NBR, in the last 2024-25 fiscal year, Bangladesh exported approximately 75,000 metric tons of rice bran oil, which generated foreign currency earnings of ৳974 crore.
