Netflix’s popular comedy program “The Great Indian Kapil Show” has landed in controversy. Allegations have been raised that one of its episodes used the iconic character “Baburao” from the Bollywood blockbuster Hera Pheri without authorization.
The complaint was filed by the film’s director Firoz Nadiadwala, who stated that *“Baburao” is not just a character but the main attraction of Hera Pheri. Played by Paresh Rawal, the character is already a registered trademark owned by their family. Using it without permission, he argued, is a direct violation of the law.
The director has demanded that Netflix and the show’s creators issue a public apology within 24 hours, remove the content, and provide assurance that such actions will not be repeated. In addition, the legal notice seeks ₹25 crore (250 million INR) in compensation.
Speaking on behalf of the director, lawyer Sana Rais Khan said: “This is not just copyright infringement but a clear case of theft.”
So far, neither Kapil Sharma nor Netflix has made any official statement regarding the matter.
