With barely a week remaining before Eid-ul-Adha, consumers in the capital’s kitchen markets are seeing a slight reprieve in the prices of broiler chicken and eggs. However, the fish market tells a different story, with prices remaining steep across various species.
A market survey conducted on Friday morning revealed that broiler chicken is now retailing between 170 and 180 BDT per kg, a notable drop from the 195 BDT mark seen just days ago. Similarly, the price of Sonali chicken has settled at 330 BDT per kg.
Poultry and Egg Trends
Egg prices have also seen a downward adjustment, decreasing by 10 to 15 BDT per dozen. Currently, a dozen eggs costs between 135 and 140 BDT.
Traders attribute this decline to an increase in supply. “Supply is higher than last week, which has naturally brought the prices down,” said Anisur Rahman, a poultry vendor. Local shoppers, like Ramiz Uddin at Rayer Bazar, noted that while prices were as high as 200 BDT per kg shortly after the last Eid, the current rate of 175 BDT offers some relief to the household budget.
Meanwhile, beef continues to sell at a steady 800 BDT per kg.
Fish Market Dynamics
In contrast to the poultry sector, the fish market remains expensive, with high volatility depending on the time of day and the volume of the catch.
| Fish Type | Price Range (per kg) |
| Pangas | 180 – 200 BDT |
| Tilapia | 200 – 230 BDT |
| Rui | 240 – 350 BDT |
| Pabda | 350 BDT |
| Shrimp/Prawn | 550 – 900 BDT |
| Local Tengra | 600 BDT |
Hilsa (Ilish) remains a luxury item. A 1kg Hilsa is currently priced between 2,500 and 3,000 BDT, while 600g specimens cost up to 2,000 BDT. Even smaller “Jatka” sized fish are selling for 800 BDT per kg.
“Fish prices are never static,” explained Yusuf Mia, a fish trader. “Prices can change between morning and afternoon based on supply. While Pangas is slightly cheaper today due to a large shipment, most other varieties remain consistent with previous high rates.”
As the city prepares for the upcoming festival, residents are keeping a close eye on these fluctuating costs, balancing the dip in poultry prices against the high cost of protein alternatives like fish and beef.
