The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has officially welcomed the signing of a pivotal reciprocal trade agreement between Bangladesh and the United States. The deal, finalized after nine months of intensive bilateral negotiations, marks a significant milestone for the country’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector.
In a statement released today, the BGMEA expressed its profound gratitude to the U.S. government and the interim government of Bangladesh for their roles in concluding the deal. The organization specifically thanked Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin, and Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman for their leadership throughout the process.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
Based on preliminary data, the agreement introduces several strategic advantages for Bangladeshi exporters:
-
Tariff Reduction: The reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi products in the U.S. market has been lowered from 20% to 19%.
-
Zero-Duty Access for US Inputs: Garments produced in Bangladesh using U.S.-sourced cotton and synthetic fibers will be exempt from any reciprocal tariffs.
-
Enhanced Market Penetration: The BGMEA anticipates that these measures will significantly increase the volume of Bangladeshi apparel entering the U.S. market.
Opportunities and Challenges
While the agreement opens a new door for export growth, the BGMEA emphasized that success depends on efficient implementation. The organization noted that because U.S. cotton is of higher quality and typically more expensive, local spinning mills must ensure competitive pricing for yarn to maximize the benefits.
“To effectively leverage this opportunity, it is essential to establish robust evaluation and traceability processes for U.S.-origin raw materials,” the BGMEA stated.
Next Steps for the Industry
As of now, the BGMEA is awaiting the full, official text of the agreement’s terms and conditions. Once the detailed documents are received from the government, the association plans to:
-
Hold an emergency meeting with its members to discuss the implementation strategy.
-
Collaborate with the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to define the future roadmap.
The agreement is viewed as a historic upgrade in bilateral relations, providing a “substantial added impetus” to an industry that remains the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy.
